Fear, ego and meditation

Today I have been reading a range of books, as is my nature. Flitting from one to the next, I always have multiple books on the go, usually around the same subject as I like to get a range of different views in one go. It’s almost like hosting my own tv show and asking all the authors what their thoughts are on a particular topic.

And the topic that showed up today, was fear. That endless, constant nagging fear you get when something just isn’t working. It could be in your career, your relationship or your finances. You know that fear that stops in you in your tracks or wakes you up at night. That kind of fear that makes you angry, upset and start projecting or lashing out at others.

That fear, according to the many books, all simultaneously state that the fear comes from the ego. It’s about control. How we feel when we are out of control, or our ego can’t handle the fact that events bigger than it is in charge. The way to release this is firstly to acknowledge your fear, feel where it is sitting in your body and then to breathe in and out until you release the pain.

Then once you’ve done this, move onto a simple meditation. If you’re not a regular meditating, try and get into the practice. There are so many wonderful and free meditations available and it doesn’t matter whether its simply a bell or a fully guided meditation. Just get into the habit of meditating daily.

Meditation is our path back to where we came from, our connection to the spirit, re-connection with our own souls. If you imagine as a baby we are born into the world and our souls are like a crisp, white clean cloth. As we grow up and experience the ups and downs of life that beautiful crisp, white clean cloth slowly becomes more and more dirty and grey.  But each time you meditate, it’s like dipping that cloth into a bowl of clean water, and it comes back up just a little bit cleaner. You see the more you meditate, the more you get into the habit of meditating the cleaner your soul can become. And don’t worry about the mechanics of it too much, they come with time. Just enjoy it and remember it’s called a ‘practice’ for a reason.
